Like many other important appliances, your water boiler requires regular maintenance. This is a crucial consideration for maintaining or even improving performance, as well as for extending the lifespan of your boiler. What sort of maintenance do boilers need, though?
One consideration here is lubrication of the circulating pump. Simply replenishing the oil cup can be enough, but if the pump is leaking fluid, it will need to be diagnosed and repaired. Another consideration here is to vent the radiator and drain the boiler each fall if the unit does not purge itself.
A visual inspection of the boiler’s exterior, as well as its vent pipe should be conducted at least once per year. These components are subject to deterioration, and may need to be replaced over time. The pressure relief valve should be tested for operation, as should the pressure tank. Note that if the tank is filled with water, it is malfunctioning.
If the boiler is being used as part of a heating system, the furnace itself will need to be tuned up once per year by a professional plumber. This tune-up should include a fuel combustion test (if the boiler is not electric). A fuel nozzle check should also be conducted.
